About Discover Engineering! Summer Program

In an effort to create a seamless transition for East Bay High School Engineering Pathway students to post-secondary education, as well as increase persistence to completion of STEM two- and four-year degree programs, the Discover Engineering! Residential Summer Program was developed in 2014.

The exciting virtual camp provides a rigorous and enriching engineering learning experience based on a real-world challenge.

Funded by Chevron, and supported by engineers, manufacturers and the construction industry, Discover Engineering! brings together Cal State East Bay engineering and construction management program professors and Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Engineering Pathway high school teachers to develop lasting relationships and to ensure a more robust link between students and their next-step strategies upon graduation. West Contra Costa Unified School District PLTW & MESA students/teachers participated along with students/teachers from Mt. Diablo and Pittsburg unified school districts.

The program was so successful, it was featured at the October Bay Area Science Festival where 12 of the 60 students showcased Discover Engineering! and demonstrated the rigor and relevance of the experience. At the showcase, a 30-minute film was created and previewed, and students engaged in a Live Chat with over 100 festival participants.

Here’s a quick look at the Discover Engineering! Summer Program:

Bay Area LEEDS oversees the project and is responsible for working with PLTW teachers and Cal State East Bay Engineering faculty each year for six months to design, plan and implement the summer academy. Discover Engineering! also includes Cal State East Bay engineering students in the spring semester spending six weeks mentoring in PLTW classrooms along with a day-long visit to Cal State’s Engineering Program prior to the residency.

Only a limited number of spaces are available for PLTW students in the summer program due to funding constraints. Therefore, participation is limited to students who are in Engineering Pathways in the following school districts at this time:

  • Mt. Diablo Unified School District
  • Pittsburg Unified School District
  • West Contra Costa Unified School District

Attendance is by invitation only and as it was in 2021, the camp will be virtual in 2022.
