About Discover Engineering! Summer Program
In an effort to create a seamless transition for East Bay High School Engineering Pathway students to post-secondary education, as well as increase persistence to completion of STEM two- and four-year degree programs, the Discover Engineering! Residential Summer Program was developed in 2014.
In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students were not allowed to stay in dorms at Cal State East Bay, and a new virtual summer camp curriculum was developed. This enabled a rigorous and enriching engineering learning experience based on a real-world challenge, while ensuring participating students remained safe at home.
Funded by Chevron, and supported by engineers, manufacturers and the construction industry, Discover Engineering! brings together Cal State East Bay engineering and construction management program professors and Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Engineering Pathway high school teachers to develop lasting relationships and to ensure a more robust link between students and their next-step strategies upon graduation. West Contra Costa Unified School District PLTW & MESA students/teachers participated along with students/teachers from Mt. Diablo and Pittsburg unified school districts.
The program was so successful, it was featured at the October Bay Area Science Festival where 12 of the 60 students showcased Discover Engineering! and demonstrated the rigor and relevance of the experience. At the showcase, a 30-minute film was created and previewed, and students engaged in a Live Chat with over 100 festival participants. Take a look!
From 2014 until 2020, Discover Engineering! was a six-day, five-night dormed experience where the team challenge was to design and build a bridge and also design an autonomous vehicle to navigate a specified portion of pre-determined track and cross the bridge and return mid-span to endure a weight-loading exercise. Rich industry experiences were also a feature, along with field trips to Cal Trans and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Here’s a quick look at the Discover Engineering! Residential Summer week-long program:
Bay Area LEEDS oversees the project and is responsible for working with PLTW teachers and Cal State East Bay Engineering faculty each year for six months to design, plan and implement the summer residency. Discover Engineering! also includes Cal State East Bay engineering students in the spring semester spending six weeks mentoring in PLTW classrooms along with a day-long visit to Cal State’s Engineering Program prior to the residency.
Only a limited number of spaces are available for PLTW students in the summer residency due to funding constraints. Therefore, participation is limited to students who are in Engineering Pathways in the following school districts at this time:
- Mt. Diablo Unified School District
- Pittsburg Unified School District
- West Contra Costa Unified School District
Attendance is by invitation only.
If you do attend school in one of the above listed districts, click here to proceed to the online registration form.
Don’t go to school in one of these districts?
For students who do not reside in one of the above-listed districts, we are offering some other excellent camps. Please consider attending the Engineering, Construction & Manufacturing Camp being held at Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill campus, the Environmental Engineering Summer Camp held at Cal State East Bay Concord Campus, and the Biotechnology Summer Camp held at the San Ramon campus of Diablo Valley College.
